What Is the Water Medicine Project? Katie explains that "water medicine" is the local name used for homeopathic remedies prepared and given in water. The project also uses a simple numbered system to help local dispensers learn and identify remedies more easily across different languages. Training Local Communities Rather than simply visiting for a short period, the team planned to train local missionaries who could take what they learned back to their communities. The training includes recognising symptoms, learning about the project's remedy kit and understanding when someone may need additional medical help. A Long History Katie shares the history of homeopathy being used by missionaries in the Solomon Islands, tracing the project's roots back to the early 1900s. Over the years, manuals and remedy kits were developed to make the system easier to teach and use locally. Updating the Remedy Kits The team has been updating older training materials and preparing new kits. Katie explains that the original manuals contained around 50 remedies, with additional remedies added over time based on what previous teams encountered. Basic Health Skills The trip is not only about homeopathy. Katie also hopes to use her audiology experience to teach people basic ear observations, while other team members may teach skills such as taking temperatures and checking blood pressure. Recognising when someone needs medical referral is particularly important in communities where access to hospitals may be difficult. Tropical Illness and Medical Care Katie mentions conditions such as malaria, dengue, typhoid, dehydration and ear infections as health concerns that may be encountered. Homeopathy has not been established as an effective treatment for these conditions and should not replace proven prevention, diagnosis, medication, hydration therapy or urgent medical care when required.
