Episode 117 - Child 44

from In The Queue - Film Conversations with Andrew and Phil · host Andrew and Phil

Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace reunite after the blockbuster success of last year's "The Drop".  Sarcasm aside, I really liked that film.  "Child 44"?  Not so much.  The plot of this Daniel Espinosa film is really convoluted, but from what we can discern, the main plot device finds Hardy as a Soviet officer tasked with solving a series of child murders in the years following WWII.  The opening quote of the film, presented as white words on a black screen, read "There are no murders in paradise."  A comment on the Soviet party line, but the setting for this film seems inconsequential to the plot.  The director tries to tell many different stories at once, which the format of the novel does better, and the result is confusing.  Andrew and Phil ripped it a new one.
