Episode 118: 1 Corinthians 14 - The Gift of Tongues

In 1 Corinthians 14, Paul confronts the Corinthians for turning spiritual gifts into a source of confusion rather than unity. The gift of tongues—like every gift of the Spirit—is an act of God’s grace meant to build up the church, not draw attention to the individual. When used properly, tongues unite believers with God in prayer and unite people with one another through the clear proclamation of the gospel. Paul therefore gives a simple principle: in the gathered church, speech must be understandable so the whole body can be strengthened. Uninterpreted tongues create distance, but the gospel creates belonging.In the end, tongues are not the goal—God is.
