Episode 12: "The Technicolor Rangers" Analyzing 1940's "Northwest Passage" as a primary source American movie audiences had their share of historical pictures to sort through by the end of the 1930s.  Many fillms during the Great Depression displayed figures from American history overcoming obstacles and hardships as a way to inspire moviegoers in their own difficult times.  But as war clouds gathered and erupted in Europe and Asia by the end of the decade, movies such as Northwest Passage shifted the commentary towards wartime propaganda.
