Welcome back to the Invasions Series. This series is all about the oldest stories of Ireland, and the people who came to this land from afar over thousands of years. Today we are talking about the Formorians… and we are not quite sure where the Formorians came from. Tory Island was their home, and the land under the sea, as their name suggests; the people from under sea - Fomóire, Modern Irish: Fomhóraigh or Fomhóire. Although the Formorians have appeared in the stories of the Mythic Cycle before, we have no clear way of knowing where exactly they came from. We have a few opinions about who they might be descended from, but nothing definitive. And Balor of the Evil Eye was one of their fearless leaders. We know he had a prophecy about him which made him think he was invincible. But at what point did he become the monster we think about when we imagine the grotesque and evil eye of his. Or was he misunderstood, like many figures in Irish Myth. We talk about the duality that often blinds us in these stories, and how looking for a clear right or wrong, a clear good and bad, is not always useful.
