Episode 121: Judge Craig Mitchell, Founder of the Skid Row Running Club: Running Is the Great Equalizer

from Run Farther & Faster — The Podcast with Coaches Lisa Levin and Julie Sapper · host Run Farther & Faster

After speaking with Skid Row Running Club member, Angel Salgado on Episode 118, we were thrilled to welcome Skid Row Running Club founder, Judge Craig Mitchell. Judge Mitchell started the Skid Row Running Club in 2012 after a man he had previously sentenced to prison, Roderick Brown, contacted him after his release to introduce him to the Midnight Mission in Los Angeles.  As soon as Judge Mitchell, a marathoner, saw the Midnight Mission, he knew that the best way to reach those recovering from addiction at the Midnight Mission was through running and formed the Skid Row Running Club, which was featured in the 2017 documentary and received worldwide attention. Check out the documentary on Amazon Prime (https://skidrowmarathon.com/) or Apple TV. Judge Mitchell shares the impact of running on addiction recovery, and how running can break communication barriers and form unexpected bonds among the diverse members of the Skid Row Running Club.  This is a riveting and important conversation.
