Episode #126 Taking Risks

from Legal Imposters · host Caroline Flanagan

If you want the reward, you have to be willing to risk. Right now, the fear of failure, of getting it wrong, of not knowing the answer, of letting people down - these are risks you're avoiding which are holding you back in your career.  They're why you're not applying for that new exciting role (which has your name written all over it and which you are already 80% qualified for).  They're why you're not contributing your ideas and perspective to meetings even though you have value to add.  Even though these are essential for your progression, the perceived risk of failure feels too high. As a black lawyer being cautious and risk avoidant is to be expected.  The higher standards you're held to, the scrutiny you face and bias you encounter make it difficult to act before you're absolutely certain you'll succeed. And therein lies the problem. There IS no certainty. No guarantee of success. No promise you'll avoid failure. So if you want to achieve the objectives of being great at what you do, being included, winning support, showcasing your value and ensuring you are retained or promoted, you must build your tolerance to risk and be willing to entertain more of it. I show you how to do this in this week's episode. In it I explain why waiting to be 100% ready is one of the secret signs of Imposter Syndrome that are holding you back in your career and how one of the ways to overcome this is to be willing to take the risk. I reveal the limitations of avoiding risk altogether and the dangers of relying on others to create safety for you.  Then, I share a process for creating your own safety so you can increase your tolerance and take the risks that are necessary so you can bring in more rewards. Happy listening.  P.S. Inside the Be The First Membership we investigate your Imposter Syndrome and make it your strength. I walk you step by step through the process for creating your Imposter Speech, so you always know what to tell yourself to overcome Imposter Syndrome in the moment so it never holds you back again. And you won't be doing this alone. You'll join a growing community of black lawyers on the same journey, learning, celebrating and supporting each other to thrive at every level. Doors to the membership open 1st May. Save this date. Keep listening for details.
