Episode 128 - Persona *Criterion Critique*
from In The Queue - Film Conversations with Andrew and Phil · host Andrew and Phil
One of the most mysterious films ever made comes to In the Queue. Ingmar Bergman's first film to eschew the question of God's existence, Persona begins with a confounding sequence of seemingly unrelated images. One thing is certain, the images draw attention to the medium of filmmaking. The film quickly becomes about a nurse named Alma who cares for an actress named Elisabeth, who has taken a vow of silence. Slowly, these two women develop a powerful connection; Alma speaks and Elisabeth listens. A betrayal occurs, which spirals this film into emotional turmoil. Classic Bergman.
