Episode 128: The Tragic Murder of Jerry Bailey

from Sinners Among Saints · host Megan and Lindsay

Send us Fan MailIn January 1976, the town of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, was shaken by the disappearance and subsequent murder of Jerry Bailey, a beloved high school football coach. Bailey had recently resigned from his position as head coach at Sapulpa High School and was preparing to transition to another coaching role. On the day of his disappearance, Bailey and his assistant coach, Paul Reagor Jr., left the school together but did not return, prompting an extensive search by the community. The following day, authorities discovered Reagor in an abandoned farmhouse several towns away, covered in blood. Tragically, Bailey's body was found in the trunk of Reagor's car, having suffered multiple stab wounds. The nature and number of wounds indicated extreme anger, suggesting a deeply personal motive behind the crime. Investigations revealed underlying personal and professional tensions between the two coaches. Reagor was subsequently convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. However, he died of natural causes before serving any time of his sentence. The case has been revisited in various media, including the true-crime book "Because of the Hate: The Murder of Jerry Bailey" by Kirk McCracken, which delves into the events leading up to the murder, the investigation, and the trial. Additionally, the television series "Murder Under the Friday Night Lights" featured an episode exploring the complexities of the case, highlighting how football, crime, and social issues intersected in this tragic event. Support the showThanks for all the support!!
