Episode 130 | Media & Mental Health Misinformation
from Psych Talk · host Dr. Jessica Rabon
On March 9, 2023 a BBC News Article came out entitled “Mental health crisis from COVID pandemic was minimal - study”. A day later on March 10, 2023 a Washington Post article entitled “Your therapist is on TikTok. Will your therapy session end up there too?” was published. Both these articles included some accurate information, but also did not provide the full picture, leading to false interpretations and the spread of misinformation. In today's episode of Psych Talk I discuss the media and mental health misinformation. I pull from two recently published articles - one based on scientific research, the other an editorial about therapists on social media - and discuss these articles and my concerns with them; particularly how they contribute to minsinformation about mental health. I discuss the potential impacts of both of these articles, as well as end the episode with discussing ways that we can be more discerning consumers of media content about social media.
