As long as you engage an SDA Assessor and Architect to ensure the changes are compliant, to then engage a builder to modify. However, if you have a much older dwelling, then a minimum 'renovation cost' is required to be spent to qualify for an SDA compliant dwelling. These minimum amounts are extremely high (circa $650,000 renovation cost) for a HPS qualification, as an example. It is lower for IL and ROBUST homes, obviously.
