Episode 136: Something Better

from Eat This Book! Hosted by Michael Whitworth

On a war memorial, the names of the victors and the fallen are carved in the same size letters, because courage is measured by faithfulness, not outcome. The writer closes his roll call by honoring two kinds of faith with equal dignity. Some, through faith, conquered kingdoms, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched fire, routed armies, received their dead back by resurrection. But then the word that changes everything: some. Some were tortured, stoned, sawn in two, homeless in caves, of whom the world was not worthy. The same faith produced both triumph and suffering. Faithfulness, not results, is the measure. And all of them, conquerors and martyrs alike, died without receiving the promise, because God had provided something better for us. The promise they awaited has arrived in Christ. And apart from us they are not made perfect. One family, one faith, perfected together. This is a public episode.
