The letters targeted individuals with accusations of infidelity, corruption, and other personal secrets. One of the most prominent targets was Mary Gillespie, a school bus driver, who was accused of having an affair with the school superintendent.In 1977, Mary’s husband, Ron Gillespie, died in a suspicious car crash after reportedly receiving a threatening phone call. The letters continued even after a suspect, Paul Freshour—Mary’s brother-in-law—was convicted and imprisoned in 1983 for attempted murder related to a booby-trapped gun intended to harm Mary.
