Episode 139: Two Mountains
from Eat This Book! · host Michael Whitworth
Imagine two doors: behind one, a roar and smoke seeping under the frame; behind the other, voices, music, your name being called. The writer stands his readers before two mountains and tells them which one they have come to. Sinai was fire, darkness, tempest, and a voice the people begged to stop. Even Moses trembled. But you have come, already arrived, to Mount Zion, the heavenly Jerusalem, with innumerable angels in festal gathering, the assembly of the firstborn, the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and Jesus, whose sprinkled blood speaks a better word than Abel's. Abel's blood cried for vengeance; this blood says mercy. Everything shakeable will be shaken so that what cannot be shaken remains. And the chapter refuses to let us grow casual: our God is a consuming fire. The mountain changed. God did not. Come with joy and awe together. This is a public episode.
