Episode 14: Crushing Debt with Attorney Shawn Yesner

from Thinking Like a Bank · host Sarry Ibrahim

Debt is of course an overwhelming subject to talk about. Most people who are in debt feel trapped and have nowhere to go. The best solution to this problem is to understand what the banks and creditors are thinking, hence the name of the show; Thinking Like a Bank. Today’s guest is attorney Shawn Yesner who is going to talk about crushing debt. Shawn M. Yesner is a Florida native, born in Tampa and raised in Miami. After graduating from Florida State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting, Shawn enrolled in the Cumberland School of Law, Samford University, graduating with a Juris Doctor (J.D.) Degree in 1998. Prior to starting his own practice, Shawn was an associate attorney at one of the largest lender foreclosure firms in Florida. There Shawn learned how to prosecute foreclosures quickly and efficiently, representing such lenders as Freddie Mac, Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA), Chase, Countrywide, and many other subprime lenders in all aspects for foreclosure litigation, bankruptcy, loss mitigation negotiations, and title insurance /title litigation. In 2004, Shawn left the plaintiff’s side of the practice to form a law firm focused on helping homeowners keep their homes or get rid of their homes while incurring minimal liability.. After building a successful multi-practice firm, Shawn founded Yesner Law, P.L., again with the focus of helping homeowners, consumers and others eliminate the financial bullies in their lives. Shawn has been a speaker at multiple Continuing Legal Education Seminars, Realtor® Education Seminars and Networking Seminars sponsored by Law Review CLE, National Business Institute (NBI), the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI), Business Network International (BNI), Tampa Bay Business Owners (TBBO), and has authored an article entitled Loan Modifications Can Help Borrowers Keep Their Homes as part of a book titled Florida Foreclosure: What Lawyers Need to Know Now published by Thomson Reuters in 2009. In November 2015, The Crushing Debt Podcast was launched and can now be heard on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Play, iHeartRadio, and other podcast players.  The podcast supports the lawfirm, with the message that “everything will be okay.”  In September 2018, Shawn’s book, Crushing Debt: 9 Strategies to Eliminate Financial Bullies was released and is available on Amazon.com. Shawn serves his Tampa Bay community as a volunteer pro bono attorney for the Stetson University College of Law Veterans Law Institute, and the St. Petersburg Bar Association Community Law Program.  He is also active within his home community serving on the Board of Directors and Variance Committee for the Westchase Community Association. Shawn also coaches his sons in soccer for the Westchase Soccer Association, and basketball at the YMCA. Shawn, his wife and two sons live in Westchase, FL.
