Episode 14: Hip Hop - Business or Art

from BRKIN Bread: For The Hungry Mind

Continuing with our #HipHop50 celebrations, we take it from the block to the boardroom, connect with the fully qualified pros and get deep into the business of Rap. Our dinner guests; Chris; Kevin and Wardah, along with host, Sabrina Clarke, connect like Voltron to talk about the mechanics of the money in Hip Hop. Nas said that he’s half man, half amazing and our guests are half creative, half business who all work behind the scenes in the music biz. With artists like Dr Dre, Tina Turner and Bob Dylan ‘suddenly’ selling their masters, the table answer the question: should artists sell their masters and get money now or let the bread cook for future generations?  Money aside, as people who love Hip Hop, we also take the time to look inward at the community and hold each other accountable. This leads to an open discussion around misogyny and homophobia in Hip Hop. Considering Hip Hop has addressed and tackled these themes in different ways, Sabrina asks the question: “Are we complicit in these forms of discrimination by listening to Hip Hop?”. This discussion also leads the table down the rabbit hole of artist censorship and how viable self-regulation in art actually is. Whoa. RIP Black Rob. While Hip Hop has played a part in bigging up women, some would argue that the culture could do a better job. Sabrina sparks mad brain cells and drops science about the visibility – or lack therof – of women in Hip Hop. Like for real, why are there SO MANY top ten rapper lists without women included? You didn’t think about that one, did you? We did. So we talked about it. Don’t be a shook one. Chris, Kevin and Wardah are BRKIN Bread Guests for Episodes 13-15. BRKIN Bread Episode 15 premieres on Wednesday 9th August 2023 at 7 pm BST/ 2:00 pm EST Looking for Episodes 1-3?
