Episode 14: May is Mental Health Month -- Some Family Stories and More on how you can get help
from The Storied Human (What is your Story?) · host Lynne Thompson
Go ahead and text me! From looking at us, you would have never guessed it -- my father was a successful pilot, we went to church, my parents were young and attractive. The world was our oyster right?Nope. We struggled with stuff, and some of it was passed on from previous generations. My mother did not get the help she needed after her difficult childhood (grandmother's schizophrenia) and had to suffer her depression by herself. Later, she sought help and got better. Our legacy was mental illness. I ended up with depression. When I got help and understood it, my life truly changed. This is a very personal episode, but hopefully not a depressing one. It's about getting the help you or a loved one may need. It's about facing mental issues and seeing them for what they are -- just another illness the body can have, like diabetes or a cold. There is help out there and the sooner we get it, the more quickly we can learn to manage our illness and thrive. My wish is that this helps you or someone you know a little with that. For more on Atypical depression, see this Mayo Clinic info:https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/atypical-depression/symptoms-causes/syc-20369747Is it Sadness or Depression?https://www.healthline.com/health/depression/depression-vs-sadness#symptomsThe stories I read during this episode are on Medium.com (my work): https://medium.com/@lynnethompson574/insane-night-e9de7da73509https://medium.com/@lynnethompson574/mild-depression-is-like-a-little-hobgoblin-making-everything-harder-2fe13a612071FYI -- For $5 a month, you can join Medium.com and support me and other writers there, and read all the stories too.My other episodes dealing with mental health:Episode 13 -- Mother's Day -- The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly https://www.buzzsprout.com/1875153/episodes/10582726 Episode 7: Grief Part Two -- What is Prolonged Grief and How can you help someone through it?Episode 6: Sadness and your path through it -- Griefhttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1875153/episodes/10285451Episode 3: Funny/Not Funny -- Life with Bipolar (retired comedian Sue Ryerson)https://www.buzzsprout.com/1875153/episodes/10155325THANK YOU FOR LISTENING!Check out my Facebook group -- The Storied Human. The Storied Human is on YouTube now-- check it out:https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLIHYKJ0fBDIF7hzWCu7b396GMJU-2qb7hHave a story?
