It’s so important to know our LGBTQIA+ history - now more than ever. If you’re going to celebrate and party all night, then you need to know why you can go out and party all night. People fought and died for your right to be out and free. Pillars of the community like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera need to be remembered because when we know where we came from, we know why we can’t go back. Obviously, there’s still a lot to be done. Politicians and corporations are lobbying to remove our rights and push us back into the closet. But we can still fight back, in more ways than one. Educating yourself and having pride in your community is the first step to taking radical action. In this week’s episode, we talk about the history of pride and real ways straight allies can show up all year round. Wearing an “ally” t-shirt at a pride parade isn’t enough. Standing up for your loved ones and treating us like people. Because, believe it or not, being queer was way more common before colonization.
