Episode 1461: Acts of the Apostles (Part 3, Chapter 1: Thomas)

Today we begin Part 3 of our series on "The Acts of the Apostles." Thomas introduces himself through the mystery of his name, which means “twin,” though the identity of his twin remains uncertain. Looking back over his life, he sees a deeper symbolism in the name: the man he was before his defining encounter with the risen Christ and the man he became afterward seem almost like two versions of the same person. Before reaching that familiar story, however, Thomas describes his natural temperament. He was cautious, analytical, and unwilling to accept claims without examining them carefully. Yet once he became convinced of something, his commitment was complete. Contrary to the common assumption that a doubter like Thomas must have been reluctant to follow Jesus, he explains that Jesus’ teaching drew him almost immediately. What impressed him was not merely eloquence or knowledge but authority—the sense that Jesus spoke about reality as someone who knew it from within. Thomas tested the teaching, searched for contradictions, and looked for weaknesses in its logic, but found none. Eventually, he concluded that refusing to follow would itself be irrational. So he committed himself to Jesus, not impulsively, but with the full force of a conviction that had survived scrutiny. During the three years that followed, what impressed Thomas most was Jesus’ consistency. He watched Him not only before crowds but in private, when tired, opposed, misunderstood, and surrounded by difficult people. Thomas kept looking for the gap between the public teacher and the private man, the place where performance would end and reality would show through. He never found it. Jesus was the same in every setting, and that uninterrupted integrity forced Thomas to consider that Jesus might truly be exactly who He appeared to be. He was still wrestling with the implications of that conclusion when the disciples received news about Lazarus—a crisis that would test both Thomas’ courage and his developing faith.
