Episode 147: Dr. David Dupuis: Working With Spirits-Voices Part II/The Social Anthropology of Hallucinations and Culture/Psychosis/Ayahuasca

from End of the Road Podcast (Immanence = Transcendence)

Dr. Dupuis is Social Anthropologist and Visiting Research Fellow at the Department of Anthropology at the University of Durham (U.K.) and a member of  the "Hearing the Voice" program.  "Hearing the Voice"  is a large interdisciplinary study of voice-hearing featuring an international research team of academics from anthropology, cognitive neuroscience, history, linguistics, psychology, theology, clinicians, and others.  In addition to shedding light on the relations between hearing voices and everyday processes of sensory perception, memory, language and creativity, the program explores why it is that some voices (and not others) are experienced as distressing, how they can cause change across the life course, and the ways in which voices can act as important social, cultural and political forces. Dr. Dupuis has conducted ethnographic surveys in Amazonian Peru for a decade, focusing on the globalization of the use of psychedelic substances.  He aims to build an anthropological comparative study of the relationships between hallucinations and culture.
