Episode 1470: Acts of the Apostles (Part 4, Chapter 5-Andrew)

Andrew’s final episode opens in Patras, where tradition places his martyrdom under the proconsul Aegeates. After years of ministry, Andrew has helped form a small but genuine Christian community that includes people close to the proconsul himself. His influence has therefore become politically costly, and he is condemned to crucifixion. According to later tradition, Andrew greets the cross peacefully, not as a performance of courage but as the completion of a life spent following the One who first called him. He reflects that the meaning of the cross lies not in its shape or manner but in the story of Christ that it carries. Facing death, Andrew finally understands the deeper purpose of the temperament and gifts that had shaped his life. He had spent years thinking of himself as the quieter brother, the one who remained outside the center of attention, but now recognizes that this was precisely how he had been equipped to serve. The kingdom, he concludes, does not depend on prominence but on faithfulness. His role had been like mortar between stones—largely unseen, yet essential to what was being built. Even the title later given him, Protokletos, the First-Called, takes on new meaning: being first was never about status. It meant becoming responsible for finding the next person. In his final reflection, Andrew returns to the first question Jesus ever asked him: “What are you seeking?” He realizes that his entire ministry has been an extended response to that invitation. What he found was not merely a teaching, institution, or system, but a person. For decades he has tried to bring others into that same encounter, one person at a time. His final testimony therefore becomes an invitation to every listener: come and see for yourself, and when you have found what you were seeking, turn toward someone else at the edge and bring them too.
