Episode 15: Choosing to Be Present with Jessica Von Borstel
from Embrace La Música · host Dominique Dynes
Jessica Von Borstel is Mexican-American and a "border baby" as she explains in this episode, growing up on the border of San Diego and Tijuana for most of her life before her journey brought her to Guadalajara. She talks about her passion for travel, yoga and how those two loves brought her to where she is today. She mentions experiencing culture shock within her own country and the difficulties of living far away from family which many of us have experienced. I am personally so grateful for Jessica as she has taught me so much about self-care, being in the moment and letting go. She constantly inspires those around her to choose to be present, because "now" is all you have for certain. I hope you are encouraged by today's episode and reminded that as little control you have in your current circumstances you are always able to be mindful and find things to be grateful for. Also, as a note and as I say to open this episode today.:"After what has been a very heavy week for many, as we are seeing a broken system, pleading for justice to be served for George Floyd, and for Breona Taylor among many other black lives who have been unjustly served, sentenced, or killed. Many of us are being awakened to a reality that has always existed and we were privileged enough to look the other way, I admit that I may not have the perfect words to articulate and I am working on my own education of a deep rooted culture and the unfair treatment of black lives for centuries. It may be difficult to recognize the part that we've played in racism, but being aware and speaking up against racism is vital."
