Necrotizing Periodontal Diseases. 2025 Jul 7. In: StatPearls [Internet]. Treasure Island (FL): StatPearls Publishing; 2025 Jan–. PMID: 32491349.12.1.25 Edit for Clarification: Producer Madi wanted to add that while Spirochete is one of the bacteria populations that contribute to this disease, Fusiform is another population that contributes in the bacterial zone. Spirochete and Fusiform are both spiral bacteria and both are typically found in large numbers in the bacterial zone of necrotizing periodontitis. Spirochete is the only bacterial strain that has its own zone, so it is likely the most present bacteria in necrotizing periodontitis.Additionally, Producer Madi and the cohosts want to clarify that we do NOT believe people with necrotizing periodontitis are disgusting. We recognize that using this word in relation to such a stigmatized disease was inappropriate and may have caused hurt or reinforced stigmas. To be very clear: The Lightning Round Podcast does not believe that people living with necrotizing periodontitis (or any health condition) are disgusting in any way. We  sincerely apologize for our wording and any offense it caused. Going forward, we will ensure our language supports dignity and understanding and does not promote judgement.
