Episode 152 - Manglehorn

from In The Queue - Film Conversations with Andrew and Phil · host Andrew and Phil

Manglehorn!  Whatta name and what an understated performance by Al Pacino in David Gordon Green's newest film.  Pacino plays a sad locksmith whose only companion is his cat, Fanny.  Fanny swallows a key and has to leave Manglehorn all by himself while she is at the vet.  So Manglehorn goes on the prowl and scores a date with a pleasant bank teller (Holly Hunter).  Their dinner date is the centerpiece of this melancholy flick from the director of 'Joe' and 'George Washington'.  Manglehorn carries a torch for a woman named Clara, whose presence is implied but never felt.  Everyone leads a small life in this little film, which Andrew really liked.  Phil enjoyed the performances but admits not everyone would sit still to observe such an understated portrait of everyday people. Both hosts agree that the magical realism aspects of the story are extremely interesting.
