Episode 152: The Journey to Becoming a Homeopath with Alexandra Ross

What is it really like to study homeopathy and train to become a professional homeopath? In this episode of the Homeopathy247 Podcast, Mary Greensmith speaks with Alexandra Ross, a homeopathy student approaching the final year of her professional training. Alexandra shares how she discovered homeopathy through working with animals, what led her to enroll at the Irish School of Homeopathy and what students can expect from a four-year homeopathic education. From Dairy Farming to Homeopathy Alexandra lives in West Cork, Ireland, where she and her husband run an organic dairy farm with around 120 cows. Her interest in homeopathy developed while looking for additional ways to support the animals on the farm. She attended courses focused on homeopathy for livestock and later began learning more about using homeopathy within her family. Her interest eventually led her from short courses into professional training. What Happens in the First Year? Alexandra explains that the first year introduces students to the foundations of homeopathy. This includes studying commonly used remedies, the history and philosophy of homeopathy, how remedies are traditionally prepared, acute and chronic prescribing, and some of the principles found in the Organon. Students also begin anatomy and physiology and complete regular assignments. Developing Your Knowledge During the second year, Alexandra says the training moves further into chronic prescribing, case work and traditional homeopathic concepts such as miasms. Students begin working through more detailed cases and continue learning about anatomy, physiology, pathology and disease. She also talks about study groups where students can discuss cases and learn together. Starting a Student Clinic One of the biggest changes comes in the third year. Alexandra explains that students begin seeing their own clients under supervision. They take the case, write up their findings and then discuss their proposed prescription with an experienced homeopath before moving forward. This allows students to gain practical experience while still having professional guidance. Learning In Person or Online Alexandra's course offers both classroom and online attendance. Although she values the flexibility of Zoom, she explains why she personally enjoys travelling to Dublin whenever possible to meet classmates, talk with tutors and experience the learning environment in person. More Than Academic Study For Alexandra, studying homeopathy has also been a personal journey. She describes becoming more aware of her own experiences, emotions and unresolved grief while progressing through the course.
