Episode 153: Where Did that Voice Come From

from To Help You Heal · host Marie Monville

In this week’s episode of To Help You Heal, I’m continuing our series on confidence by talking about something many of us experience every day without even realizing it—negative self-talk. The truth is, the way we speak to ourselves didn’t just appear out of nowhere. That inner voice came from somewhere. It was shaped by experiences, environments, expectations, pressure, comparison, survival mode, and the things we picked up along the way. And so often, we don’t even question it—we simply assume it’s true. But what if the harshest voice in your life is the one inside your own head? In this episode, I talk about where that voice may have come from, why many of us developed patterns of pressure and self-criticism, and how awareness becomes the turning point for healing. I also share some of the ways I’ve personally learned to shift my internal dialogue—not through toxic positivity, but through curiosity, grace, and gentler questions. This conversation is an invitation to stop speaking to yourself like the enemy and start offering yourself the same compassion you would extend to someone you love. In this episode, I talk about: Why negative self-talk feels so normal for many of us Common inner dialogue patterns like: “You should be doing more” “You’re behind” “That wasn’t good enough” How childhood environments, performance-based approval, comparison, perfectionism, and survival mode can shape the way we speak to ourselves Why being hard on ourselves can feel productive or protective The difference between conviction and criticism How awareness helps us begin changing the voice inside our heads Learning to replace shame and pressure with curiosity and compassion The phrase that helps me:   “I’m doing the best I can with what I have.” Reflection Questions: What does my inner voice sound like most often? Where might I have learned to speak to myself that way? What beliefs about worth, success, or love might be driving it? What would compassion toward myself sound like today? You are allowed to question the voice that constantly pressures you. And while that voice may have been learned, it can also be changed. Thanks for joining me for this week’s episode of To Help You Heal. I hope this conversation encourages you to offer yourself more grace and reminds you that healing sometimes begins with simply learning to speak to yourself differently.
