Episode 155 - Tommy *Listener's Choice*

from In The Queue - Film Conversations with Andrew and Phil · host Andrew and Phil

Baked beans ain't just for eating.  According to iconoclastic British director Ken Russell, they're also for bathing.  Ann-Margret turns in a balls-to-the-wall performance as the mother of the titular pinball-savant, and she steals the show.  But there is much at which to gawk in this hallucinatory 1975 adaptation of the the celebrated rock opera by The Who.  You've got Elton John, Tina Turner and Eric Clapton appearing in musical numbers.  Jack Nicholson is here too, and man can he not sing.  Russell adapted the tale by himself (with a little help from some Who bandmates) and the result is a phantasmagoria of religious satire, frightening surrealism and yes, baked beans. Mmmm, beans.  Thanks to our new guest, Liz for recommending the film and coming onto the podcast to talk about it.  She's awesome!
