Episode 155: What Should You Be Doing Every Day to Become a Better Writer

from The Savvy Scribe

Send us Fan MailIn this episode, I’d love to answer this question: what should you be doing every day to become a better writer? So, what kind of tip can I share that you might didn’t know yet?You might know the answer, or you might not. Of course, this tip will determine your success as a writer. I’ve seen this way too much over the years of being a writer. The daily habit that determines the most success as a writer is to READ and WRITE every single day.Back in my day, I was not a reader. I didn’t like to read nor know the best edition. I wasn’t even the fastest reader growing up and I struggled in English class. I just always think a little bit differently from other typical learners. I just always want to study for my grades so it was always hard for me.Reading was not fun for me and so I always struggle. Then, I took up nursing and all we did was read. But I wasn’t enjoying it because it was all about medical stuff. I feel like I was only reading to pass the test. I never even finished the book that I enjoyed. That time, I wasn’t also pushed to do it, so I don’t want to do it.What I Did To Become A Better WriterBut nowadays, I’m a completely different person. I have that mindset that if you don’t like reading, you just have to find a good book. There’s a book for everybody out there.Every writer I spoke to in my podcast, whether writer or not, I asked them for their favorite book. And a lot of them say, there are so many. That’s because they love to consume the content. They love to read. And it makes them better writers.Does that mean I sit down every single day to open a book? Nope. But I’ll tell you I open my audiobook every day. Or I listen to something engaging like this.I challenge you to download this free app called Goodreads. Make a book list, fiction and non-fiction, and try your best to read at least 20 minutes per day. Take a walk. Cook dinner. Fold the laundry and listen. And you will become a better writer. The more we listen to the language, the more we hear description words, and we start to put them into our writing. So every day, you should be writing. If you’re writing just to write, and you didn’t know where you’re going, just write. Get that creativity and expression out of whatever you’re writing. Do what makes you happy. Write what makes you feel good and you’ll become a better writer because of it. Welcome to the Savvy Scribe Podcast, I'm so glad you're here!
