This is episode 156 for Thursday, January 31, 2019. It's 6.38 pm on the East Coast, and today is the podcast I have been waiting several weeks to do. It's the Ridge Wallet product review. And I am seriously so excited to do this because the minute I received this wallet and took it out of the box when they sent me one, I wanted to do the product review right then and there because this product is below away the first time you hold it in your hand.
But I used a little self-discipline and actually held off a few weeks, so I could be honest about my experiences using the wallet every day. I did post a bunch of pictures to my Instagram and Twitter throughout the time that I had the wallet during those few weeks so that you guys could see exactly what I was going to be talking about for this product review. And before I jump into the specifics, like many of you, I have a checklist of everyday carry items that are on my person on any given day.
For you women out there, your everyday carry is what is in your purse. And for us guys, it's usually what we can fit in our pockets. For me, I always have a work challenge coin in my pocket, a small Swiss Army type knife, a small individually wrapped lens wipe, and a hand wipe. But I've been carrying wallets my whole life and I never considered that to be part of my everyday carry, even though my wallet is the longest thing I've been carrying, and undoubtedly the most important item that I carry.
And I've had the leather back pocket wallet. I've even had the cloth and Velcro back pocket wallet way back in the day, but I've never used a front pocket wallet or just a standalone money clip. I guess I was fearful that I wouldn't be able to fit everything in a slimmed down version of the bulky junk pile that I carried in my back pocket for all those years. So, when I got the Ridge Wallet sent to me, I was excited to try something new.
And so, for starters, like I said, right out of the box, the craftsmanship is world-class. It looks great. It feels amazing in your hands, and it is the exact dimensions of a credit card with expandable front and back aluminum plates that are held together by three elastic straps. The aluminum wallet only weighs two ounces, and it holds up to 12 cards.
The version I received has a money clip attached to the back plate, and the idea is that you just slide each one of your credit cards, driver's license, insurance card, whatever you're carrying right in between the two plates, and the wallet self expands to the size and dimensions of your card stack. Once it's filled, you now have a small, compact, minimalist version of what you used to carry in your back pocket. And this thing is just fun to hold in your hands. There's something about the sleek, minimalist design and organization of all your cards that is very satisfying to me, because in my world, I wear a lot of equipment on my duty belt.
I have a certain flashlight that I carry and certain traumasizers that I carry, and those things have to be sturdy enough to meet the demands for when I'm out in the field. Those pieces of equipment are an extension of my body when I operate. And this wallet, absolutely to me, feels like it is an extension of my body when I hold it because of the design and the craftsmanship of it. It just feels perfect whenever I'm holding this thing.
I carry mine in my front pocket because that just feels like the natural place for it to be. And to be honest, I don't miss sitting on my old bulky wallet. I usually have back pain every day, and I never made the connection to sitting on a wallet, giving me back pain. But since I've been carrying the ridge wallet in my front pocket, I don't have back pain anymore from just sitting.
And that's a huge deal for me. One of the great features of the ridge wallet are those expandable front and back plates that I talked about earlier, because built right in is complete RFID protection. And what that means is that's protection from hackers that can scan your unprotected purse or your old wallet with radio equipment and steal your credit card numbers and your identity.
