Episode 159 - Black Mass

from In The Queue - Film Conversations with Andrew and Phil · host Andrew and Phil

Johnny Depp pulls off another successful disappearing act, this time playing James 'Whitey' Bulger.  He's the spitting image of the notorious South Boston criminal in this film, and his acting chops equal his convincing appearance.  'Black Mass' deals with Bulger's involvement with FBI agent John Connolly, who negotiated with the gangster to gain intelligence on other mafia.  The acting is uniformly good, and Andrew was especially impressed with Joel Edgerton as Connolly. Phil found the film to be curiously uninvolving, adding nothing to a well-worn genre.  One must admit, with a film like this, it's hard to escape the looming specter of 'Goodfellas'...
