Episode 16: Feeding of the Five Thousand
from So, What About Us? · host Steven Clark, Ben Phillips
How are you resting? How highly do you value teaching? And where are you trusting yourself for daily bread instead of the Lord who provides it? When the disciples return exhausted from their mission, Jesus calls them to a desolate place to rest. But the crowd gets there first, and what follows is the only miracle recorded in all four Gospels. In this episode, Pastor Steven and Pastor Ben work through Mark 6:30-44 and uncover a story that runs far deeper than a math problem of five loaves and two fish. They trace the Bible's rich theology of food, from the forbidden fruit in Eden to the Passover lamb, the manna in the wilderness, and the marriage supper of the Lamb. Along the way they wrestle with what it means to be "sheep without a shepherd," why teaching is the first thing Jesus does when compassion moves him, and how rest and daily bread are built-in reminders that we are not God. They also draw out the stark contrast between Herod's hedonistic banquet and Jesus' banquet in the wilderness, and consider how this miracle anticipates both the Last Supper and the new Exodus, a genuine reversal of the curse as bread comes down from heaven once again. The episode closes with a personal word: Pastor Ben shares his heart with the congregation about the upcoming sabbatical the elders have given him, a real taste of "come away and rest" lived out in the life of the church.
