Episode 16 — Leviticus 16: Once a Year
from As It Is Written Hosted by Athena Vetterick
Leviticus 16, verse by verse — the center of the book: the Day of Atonement. Two goats chosen by lot. One 'for the LORD,' slain, its blood carried inside the veil and sprinkled on the mercy seat. One 'for Azazel' — a name the text's own footnotes leave honestly uncertain — bearing every confessed sin on its head into the wilderness: an offering made to no one. The high priest alone, dressed in linen instead of gold, entering the cloud of incense 'lest he die,' cleansing the sanctuary itself from Israel's uncleanness. Once a year, every sin named and carried out, the slate wiped clean. Exegesis style: the text's own words first.
