Episode 160: Cina - The Remedy for Parasites, Tantrums and Tummy Troubles with Jessica de Barco

from Homeopathy 247 Podcast · host Homeopathy247

What is the traditional Cina remedy picture, and why is this remedy so often associated with children, irritability and intestinal worms? In this episode of the Homeopathy247 Podcast, Mary Greensmith speaks with Jessica de Barco for a closer look at Cina. Jessica shares her experience of studying and using this remedy and explains why homeopaths traditionally look beyond one physical symptom to consider behaviour, sleep, digestion and the child's overall presentation. Cina and Intestinal Worms Cina is traditionally one of the best known homeopathic remedies associated with intestinal worms, particularly pinworms. Jessica discusses symptoms that may lead a homeopath to explore this picture, including itching around the bottom, disturbed sleep, bedwetting, restlessness and changes in behaviour. However, these symptoms can have many different causes and do not confirm that a child has parasites. Pinworm and other intestinal parasite infections should be properly diagnosed and treated with appropriate antiparasitic medicine when needed. Homeopathy has not been established as an effective treatment for eliminating intestinal worms. The Emotional Cina Picture One of the strongest themes Jessica describes is intense irritability. Within traditional materia medica, a child fitting the Cina picture may have sudden angry outbursts, become extremely impatient or direct their frustration toward parents and siblings. Jessica also talks about restlessness, fidgeting and behaviours that can make family life difficult. These behaviours alone should never be assumed to indicate a parasitic infection. A Case from Jessica's Practice Jessica shares a case involving an eight-year-old boy who was experiencing strong emotional outbursts, bedwetting, nightmares and restlessness. During the consultation, she also learned that he had a previous history of worms. Jessica explains why the overall picture led her to consider Cina and describes the changes his family later reported, including calmer behaviour. She also reports that worms were noticed in his stool during this period. This is an individual case experience and does not establish that Cina caused the improvement or eliminated the infection. Cina Beyond Worms Jessica explains that Cina is not only discussed in relation to parasites. Within traditional homeopathic materia medica, it may also be considered for: Teething accompanied by strong irritability Abdominal discomfort Spasmodic pains around the abdomen Restlessness and disturbed sleep Bedwetting Strong emotional outbursts The combination of symptoms is more important than any one characteristic alone. Is Cina Always the Remedy for Worms? Jessica emphasizes that it is not. Although Cina may be one of the first remedies homeopaths traditionally think about, other remedy pictures may fit better. She mentions remedies such as Sulphur, Calcarea carbonica, Natrum muriaticum, Teucrium and China as examples found within the wider homeopathic literature. This is why individualized prescribing looks at the complete symptom picture rather than choosing a remedy simply because worms are suspected. Looking at the Bigger Picture A recurring theme throughout the episode is that an initial remedy may sometimes help a homeopath understand a case more clearly. Jessica describes Cina as something she may consider early in certain cases before reassessing the child's broader physical and emotional health. Key Takeaways Cina is traditionally associated with intestinal worms and strong irritability. Emotional outbursts are an important part of its traditional remedy picture. Bedwetting, nightmares and restlessness may also be considered. Cina is traditionally discussed for teething and digestive discomfort. Behaviour alone cannot diagnose a parasitic infection. Cina is not the only homeopathic remedy associated with worms. Suspected parasites should receive appropriate medical diagnosis and treatment. Homeopathy should complement, not replace, evidence based medical care.
