Episode #161: Brian Bowen Smith / Photographer

from Visual Revolutionary

On this episode of the show I'm joined by well known commercial, celebrity, and fine art photographer Brian Bowen Smith to talk about his newest coffee table book and amazing quarantine inspired cross country adventure called "DriveBys" where he traveled around in his vintage F150 and took beautiful black and white scenics and portraits of people from all walks of life through the window of his truck.  We also talk about his challenging upbringing in Syracuse, and how he went from what he called a dirt bag punk kid, to one of the top collegiate gymnastic athletes, to an inspiring actor living in New York, to a professional rollerblader in LA, to working closely with legendary photographer Herb Ritts, and finally to creating the amazing photography career that most know him for today.  It's an amazing journey and story, and during our conversation we talk about the role of luck and where hard work comes in, how he managed to get his foot in the door of the very competitive world of celebrity work, how he constantly tries to grow and evolve as a photographer and stay competitive, what inspired him to create his newest personal project, and so much more.
