Episode 167 - Crimson Peak

Beware of 'Crimson Peak'...it's only got a 69% on Rotten Tomatoes...Meh.  Guillermo Del Toro's newest horror film is not bad, but it's not particularly great either.  The Mexican director is one of the most devout fans of classic cinema around, and his supernatural romance is crammed to the gills with references to horror movies come and gone.  Phil picked up on Hitchcock's 'Rebecca' and Polanski's 'Rosemary's Baby' as two sources from which much of Del Toro's story is borrowed.  In a way, the creative genius behind 'Pan's Labyrinth' is phoning it in for much of the film, but the invigorating climax of 'Crimson Peak' mitigates the whole moviegoing experience from becoming a wash. There is plenty for the eyes to enjoy for the entire running time, but a movie has to be more than look good.  It has to be, you know, moving!
