Episode 169: A listener threatens to call our bishop, but pulls out and calls in to the show instead

Craig and Jonah have a lengthy conversation with a newly-married listener named Josh who recently found the podcast and was upset at some of our video clips. After Josh threatened to call our bishop on account of our content, we invited Josh on the show and he graciously accepted the invitation to defend the faith. This episode is our discussion with Josh about his complaints and criticisms, which led to a respectful and productive discussion on topics such as masturbation, marriage, abstinence, addiction, and even Onan. "Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action." "The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose." For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of "the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved." To form an equitable judgment about the subjects' moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability. For just reasons, spouses may wish to space the births of their children. It is their duty to make certain that their desire is not motivated by selfishness but is in conformity with the generosity appropriate to responsible parenthood.
