Episode 174 - California Genie Identifies “Jane Doe” From 1968

from Extreme Genes · host Extreme Genes

Fisher opens the show with David Allen Lambert, Chief Genealogist of the New England Historic Genealogical Society and AmericanAncestors.org. David shares big news for people whose ancestors were New England Catholics as NEHGS and the Boston Catholic Diocese are working together to digitize and index Catholic records from 1789 to 1900, which includes over 100 parishes. The boys then talk about the significance of Illumina announcing they have developed a technique by which each individual can map their own personal genome which has great significance for matching with cousins… and it will be at a comparable price to today’s DNA tests! Also, a historic figure from World War II has passed at 105. Hear who this person was and what she was known for. David then shares a very basic search tip that could help many beginners enormously. Next, Fisher begins his two part visit with Rita Hood. Rita is an amateur genealogist who ran across information on a woman found dead in California in 1968. The woman was listed as a “Jane Doe,” but Rita spotted a clue to help identify her in the public record and went to work. Rita will take you through each clue and each step she took to final identify the woman after 49 years! In the process Rita found the woman’s next of kin. Hear how her efforts have changed his life, and hers. Then Tom Perry, the Preservation Authority, drops in to talk about new products introduced at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. What’s out there to help genies discover, preserve, and share? Tom will tell you! That’s all this week on Extreme Genes, America’s Family History Show!

Designer Genes: A Conversation about CRISPR Efrain C., Hope J., Maria R., Sanjay A.L. From Mendel to modern laboratories, genome-editing has fascinated the minds of many. Recently, the CRISPR-Cas9 system has been a major advancement in genome editing. Though this newly discovered mechanism has shown the potential to cure life-threatening genetic problems, the novelty of it has caused some concerns over potential ethical violations. Designer Genes is a conversation hosted by four curious biology undergraduates at Emory University that attempts to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge of CRISPR and the general public’s understanding. See website for references. Behind the Genes Genomics England At Genomics England, our vision is a world where everyone benefits from genomic healthcare. From the latest research to the lived experiences of those affected by rare conditions and cancer, Behind the Genes brings you closer to the people behind the science.  Each month, we release a deep-dive episode, alongside our Genomics 101 series - short explainers designed to make complex terms in genetics and genomics easier to understand. Dr Giles Yeo Chews the Fat Orion Publishing Ltd. We tend to reduce food and health to bitesize nuggets of information, like calories or BMI. It’s understandable; numbers are easily digestible when we’re looking for answers or a quick fix. But the thing is, there’s a lot more to health – hey, there’s a lot more to life! – than the numbers you see on the back of a crisp packet or on the scales. Geneticist Dr Giles Yeo feels we need a bit more space to think about the relationship food has with our body, our mind, and even our soul! Join Giles as he chews the fat with fellow foodies, scientists, and doctors. Across this series, he’ll be asking how our genes play a role in weight loss and gain, how our stomachs chat to our brains, and whether going on a run really means we can gorge on doughnuts when we get home...
