Episode 175: Banita Jacks: A Mother's Deadly Secret

from Sinners Among Saints · host Megan and Lindsay

Send us Fan MailBanita Jacks is a Washington, D.C. resident who was convicted in 2009 for the murder of her four daughters: Brittany (17), Tatianna (11), N'Kiah (6), and Aja (5). The case gained national attention due to the tragic circumstances of the girls' deaths and the systemic failures of local social services. In January 2008, U.S. Marshals arrived at Jacks’ southeast D.C. rowhouse to serve an eviction notice. Inside, they discovered the decomposing bodies of the four children in upstairs bedrooms. Investigators estimated the girls had been dead for several months, potentially since the late summer of 2007, during which time Jacks continued to live in the home with the remains. Jacks waived her right to a jury trial, leaving the decision to D.C. Superior Court Judge Frederick H. Weisberg. In July 2009, she was convicted of four counts of felony murder, three counts of first-degree premeditated murder, and four counts of child cruelty. In December 2009, Banita Jacks was sentenced to 120 years in prison (30 years for each child). The case led to significant reforms in Washington, D.C.'s Child and Family Services Agency after it was revealed that multiple reports of neglect had not been properly investigated prior to the murders.Support the showThanks for all the support!!
