Episode 19 - Sacrificing Creativity for Others

from Topicocalypse · host Humannequin Media

Welcome back Topicocalypse fans! It's Valentines Day and if you're reading this, you're probably just as single as we are, which means you have time to listen to this podcast. We're joined by a very special guest and first time podcaster Nicole Noonan, who made us think about things that don't involve Fred Durst and Alex Jones impersonations. On this episode Josh opens up by telling us a story about a movie that he and his brother bonded over called Spring. Check it out on Amazon Prime today. Anyway, Josh and his brother loved this movie, but after his brother got married, his wife told him that he was no longer allowed to watch it because some of the movie seemed "demonic" and they're both slightly fanatical in the religion category. This leads to Josh's question to the rest of the table, is it ever okay to give up something that inspires you for your significant other or your reputation? This also leads into a conversation about some of history's greatest pulp-fiction writers (not the Quentin Tarantino film) like Robert E. Howard, Edgar Rice Burrough, and more modern pulp writers like Mike Mignola, who write about heroes who are deeply flawed and sometimes dabble in dark things, but it's always to save lives. Point and case Mike Mignola's Hellboy comics, which some people boycot because of what Hellboy is. As an artist where do you draw the line between your peer group, reputation and your ability to succeed? We talk about all of this and more on this episode of Topicocalypse.
