Episode 191: 5 People Jailed for Not Reporting Abuse

from The Speaking Out on Sex Abuse Podcast · host Jimmy and Clara Hinton

When officials at Midland Christian School in Texas were told about a 9th grade boy being bullied and sexually assaulted with a baseball bat they did nothing. Superintendent Jared Lee told other staffers to investigate instead of calling the police. As a result two coaches and three administrators were arrested and charged with failure to report and intent to conceal neglect or abuse. Failure to report has very serious consequences. This is because victims are cheated out of getting the help they need and abusers run free. When this story broke, it didn't take long for Christians to blast news outlets, calling them fake news and saying there is no point in reporting this kind of "news." Some readers argued that people are innocent until proven guilty, so reporters are just "throwing stones" at these faculty members. In this episode we talk about the need to report and how these arrests could be a demonstration of more of what's to come when mandated reporters cover up abuse.
