June is Men's Mental Health Month and in honor of Father's Day in this episode of Psych Talk I discuss paternal mental health. Paternal mental health is an area that is under discussed and under researched, which is unfortunate as a father's mental health not only impacts his wellbeing and functioning, but also his child, partner, and family as a whole. I provide some of the [limited] statistics on paternal mental health and various signs and symptoms of paternal mental health concerns. I discuss risk factors for developing maternal mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety, as well as implications and adverse outcomes of poor paternal mental health. I discuss ways individuals and the greater society can help support fathers struggling with their mental health, as well as advocate for the need to increase awareness about paternal mental health concerns.
