And once you understand her history, everything makes sense.   Lily’s Backstory Will Break Your Heart Lily has been abandoned again and again. Every man she thought she could trust has walked away. On top of that, her parents are toxic and cruel. Her father tells Dan, when he comes to ask for her hand: ‘Good riddance.’ That one moment tells you everything about what Lily has lived with. She has been made to feel worthless her entire life. So when Dan shows up with love and kindness, she cannot accept it. She pulls away. She expects him to leave just like everyone else. It is self-preservation. And once you understand that, you stop being frustrated with her and start rooting for her completely.   Historical Christian Romance Meets Edge-of-Your-Seat Suspense This book is not just a sweet love story. There is real danger woven throughout. Geronimo and his raiding band are terrorizing the surrounding areas. That adds a layer of tension that never lets up. There is also an unexpected murder near the beginning of the book. It comes out of nowhere and sets the tone for how high the stakes are. One scene toward the end had us genuinely scared for Lily.
