Episode 196 - Anomalisa

The genre of animation is seldom applied to telling serious adult stories.  We have Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson to thank for adapting this very grown-up play and infusing it with wondrous puppetry and digital animation.  Despite all the innovation, 'Anomalisa' feels like the work of a bitter pessimist.  Lacking the emotion and humor of Kaufman's early screenwriting triumphs, Phil thinks that Kaufman's current period of directing his own scripts makes him nostalgic for the early collaborations with brilliant directors like Gondry and Jonze.  Andrew feels 'Anomalisa' is strong technically, and evokes the human world we all take for granted.   You can download the podcast here by right-clicking on the hypertext link and choosing "save as", or you can use the convenient player attached to this post.
