Virginia and Ben Ali founded Ben's Chili Bowl in Washington DC in 1958. The restaurant is a neighborhood institution that has been frequented by United States presidents, athletes, celebrities, and community leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ben's Chili bowl has lasted through segregation, the riots in the 1960s, the drug epidemic, and the creation of the metro.
