Welcome to Talking Nonsense. I'm your host Kyle, and I'm here with Christopher. And if you listened to us last week, we talked about TV shows, and this week, well, we ended on kind of a good note, kind of, I guess, in a way. I'll have to say so.
We ended on the show 13 Reasons Why, and pretty much how that high school, it's just the way TVs portray high school, it's just so different from what we experienced. You know what I mean? And it's just, it's crazy to think about, and that's what we're gonna talk about this week, is just our high school experiences. And before we actually really jump into that, we wanna say again, as a disclaimer, this is all just our own opinions.
I mean, you and I went to different high schools anyways. So we're probably gonna have different things to say about that, but again, this is just our opinion. We're just talking nonsense, hence the name of the show. So just sit back, relax, and enjoy.
I guess we'll just jump right into it. I mean, one of the things that I wanted to talk about, obviously, since we ended off last time on the podcast, how 13 Reasons Why, that high school was just, the way they portrayed it was just like, whoa. I've never experienced that. I think when, before I got into high school, I had some expectations for it, but I wanna hear what you had.
Did you have any expectations for high school? In a way, I mean, you're in eighth grade, or is it typical, oh, the freshman, what was it called, Freshman Fridays, were they Freshman Fridays? Yeah, I had an expectation too. I was worried for that as well.
Yeah, like that whole general, oh, look at this Freshman, he's a little punk kid, but honestly, I don't know how that started, just cause like, remembering high school and at least from what I can remember Freshman year, it wasn't really like that at all. It was just, yeah, no, it was totally fine. Like there was no, I'd never experienced Freshman Friday. I didn't see it.
Neither, I mean, if they did it, then they were really good. You know, like stealthy. Yeah, at least I'd never experienced it, but. I did have a funny thing about Freshman year.
The day before the first day of high school, it was the day before, so hard to say. That night, it was, there was a lightning storm. And I could not sleep, cause it was just like lightning rain, like it's the first day of high school tomorrow. Yeah, first day of high school was in Vegas, right?
Yeah. That's where you're from. Right? Where you moved to for high school.
Yeah, yeah, okay. There was thunderstorm before? Yeah, it was in high school? Yeah, and it was just like that typical movie where it was in the sense of like, you're about to go off to this unknown world.
And there's dark clouds, so it was just pretty funny that would happen today. Were you never at all? Cause first day of high school? Yeah, just cause of the rain.
And like, it got to me. I was like, damn, this is an omen. Oh yeah, it's like, oh man, tomorrow's gonna be the first day of the phase. I won't come home with a black eye.
Luckily I didn't, but I mean, I was pretty nervous about it. I mean, like, cause everyone talks it up in such a way and you don't know what's really gonna happen, I suppose. Right. Cause I mean, I had a brother who went to the same high school as I did, but he graduated before I became a freshman.
Okay, I was actually gonna ask you that. Yeah, so my expectations kind of came off of what he experienced. Or I guess what I saw he experienced in high school, which weren't bad things. He had a good time.
I was thinking it. I'm sure he did. Anyways, so I was just expecting it to be something like what he went through, you know, just normal, make good friends, make new people. I was of course nervous as well, like you.
I can't quite remember how I felt for the first day of school. All I noticed that when I did go and it was the first day of school, I was nervous then, cause you know, new school didn't have all the classes work. And I actually have a pretty funny story about one of my classes, which we'll get into in a bit. But I mean, as you said, like freshman Friday, I was worried about that too.
Like, I don't know how, yeah, I don't know who started that. I mean, I guess it's around in all the high schoolers. I knew about it, you knew about it. Yeah, but yeah, freshman Friday was just like a thing that everyone.
Like talked to the right. It was like a social norm. Like, oh, freshman Friday, everyone's going to get trash or something. Yeah, but like I said, I've never, the reality of it was that never happened.
Yeah. Other than like freshman Friday, do you remember like other stuff along those things? Like, I remember one year there was like, was it slap ass Thursday or something? What?
No, I've never heard that. She was like slap ass Thursday? I don't know if it was Thursday. It was like, they picked a random day of the week and it was like a thing for that week.
And that was what they do, slap ass. Yeah, I mean, I didn't do it cause like, I was too much of a pussy to do. Like, slap ass. I mean, that'd be your refreshment.
You couldn't do it yet. Yeah. But no, I mean, like they're out of high school, we always had these like, oh, it's like a random day of the week and there's like a random thing associated with that day of the week. Yeah.
Well, I mean, they had homecoming, which every day was a different thing. No, I know. But I mean, unofficially, like, like freshman Friday was obviously no school. Yeah.
Homecoming week, freshman Friday, guys. Yeah, go for that. Yeah, go for that. Yeah, go for that.
Yeah, go for freshman. But no, like, unofficially, my school kind of had this recurring theme for like two months. I was just like a random. No, I don't know.
I mean, like, I think I had a lot of stuff that my school did. If they did, I was out of the loop, you know, and I think, I guess that brings me to my next point like, did you have any special clicks? I don't know how that brought that to that point, I guess being out of the loop, but I was like quick, right? Right.
So did you notice your school has plays, because if there's been why, you know, that show, they picked the Jocks being only with the Jocks and the Nerds with the Nerds. And why not? I think every TV show basically does that as well. Yeah.
Yeah, like I feel like that's pretty stereotypical trope to do on a TV show. But did you notice that? Yeah. It was kind of like all the jocks kind of hook up with each other and then like I guess I mean as far as the nerds go is kind of like They're like different nerd groups cuz like they're like the like non Asian nerds and then the Asian nerds And then the cool Asian group.
Yeah, which were also nerds But they just weren't as nerdy as yeah, like nerdy Asian group, but yeah, I mean it's something I noticed I I myself never really thought I belonged in a single click like I had kind of friends ever like in different social circles That's yeah, so I was kind of drifted. Mm-hmm, you know left or right whatever cuz I was gonna say like I did see like The jocks hanging out with the jogs during legend stuff, but I had friends who were athletes Yeah, you know and then I had friends who were straight up nerds. Yeah academic scholars. Sorry not you know Yeah, no nothing like wrong being a nerd.
I was a nerd kind of I guess yeah in different groups You know how was spread out and I feel like with that it was cool because then I mean at lunch I had a specific group. Yeah, same here But I sat with we also like everyone in that group had friends spread out as well. Yeah, it was just I knew I'd get to your school Do you know I have no idea? Okay kind of a lot I guess yeah, it was a yeah decent amount I don't think it was over a thousand.
Okay. I don't know actually that's a good question I'm not sure my school like I think we peaked out like 2000 some students. Oh, yeah I do not mind might have been over a thousand. I don't know I'm lowballing it honestly Yeah, I don't know how big schools are nowadays.
No, no, no you are heavy noticed or like do you think social clicks now? Like different or like maybe evolve or like there are more groups now that we didn't have back then I guess back then you had maybe you probably have like the Instagram models now. Yeah, you know the Snapchat people now or something All these people social media groups the vineers. Yeah, the mine well, but I was a thing.
Yeah, probably vineers. Yeah, sure I feel like there's a bigger variety of like I guess groups now because like me back then like you ever talk about goss But we didn't really have any like like hardcore goth kids. Yeah, you know, I mean like there are people who are black but they weren't like headbanging I think there were a few that were like that but Really? I don't know.
Yeah, like you said a lot of people were I noticed a lot of people were in black But I never considered them as goss because they didn't have like a full-on makeup. Yeah, so Like yeah, I mean my click click. I guess you could call it. It was me.
Well, okay, so here's the thing I took When I got into high school, I was put into the space engineering academy because my high school had that program. Yeah, different programs at our high school There was a space engineering academy and then eventually I think they brought on like Some agricultural academy agricultural academy or something like that And so my freshman year a lot of the classes that I took were specifically designed on the space engineering academy so I had specific classes that I needed to take and Being in those specific classes and having those other students in there that were also in that academy We took the same classes pretty much all years of high school. Okay, so all kind of yeah, so you all stuck together So that was my that was my click but a lot of those students that were in that academy They weren't like straight up nerds. There were some of them were athletes You don't want to work nerds some of them were cool people I guess you could say and because of that That's how I kind of had myself in all the other different groups in campus.
Yeah, so I mean did you take any like special courses or anything in I school I mean not like specializing you're stupid. You're not that special stupid either. Yeah Man, this isn't getting stricken down Please don't trick us out. It's our opinion anyways.
Yeah, right? Refer to that disclaimer. Um, I mean I took like like my elected classes Like I picked because I was interested in that subject But we didn't have anything like a space program or anything like that as far as I can remember I mean we did have like you know your band or choir like in different like social clubs like after school and everything like that Were you and did you join any clubs? Yeah, so like My junior year I was loosely in key club I remember key club like where all Asians went yeah, and then see was the was that the community service?
Yeah, right? That's the community service. Yeah despite the name we don't make keys. I know right.
Yeah, I never understood that I think it was an acronym for something good. Yeah, like um, I mean Really knowing every you have an idea. I mean that's actually pretty good. I don't know how that deals with community.
Yeah Yeah, it was a community service club right yeah senior year. I got really involved with it Just because you remember Mickey. Yeah, Mickey was I think president at that time at him and I were close Yeah, but yeah, like the reason I got involved with like different groups was just because I took a bunch of different classes I was interested in and like there are other people in that class and you know how it is when you just go to class like whoever you sit next He was just yeah, whatever that's the other thing too like the difference between High school and college is that you're in the same class for pretty much the whole year whereas in college you're only in that class for Few months yeah, or any it also in college. You have your freedom So you can do whatever you want but in high school when you're in that class for pretty much the whole year Of course those people in there are eventually gonna become your friends with you click or so at least hopefully they would yeah I mean cuz like what's funny is or not I guess not funny.
I've never thought about it the other way where I was in a class where I Didn't like anyone I always managed to make friends. I mean granted were not they probably weren't like the best of friends But it was just like it was enough to get through the year. You know I mean Have you ever like experienced or think I hate this class no one talks to me or anything like that like um no I don't think so because like I said because I was in the face engineering academy We had to take certain classes. So whatever the classes I took were pretty much I mean they weren't classes that I wanted to take I Honestly was only in the academy because my brother wasn't it before and it's supposed to look good for colleges So that's why I joined it.
I mean it's such an interest me It did but if I had a choice actually not I'm glad I took it because of the fact that it put me in so many different groups Yeah, you know and it just it introduced me to different stuff and different aspects of subjects. I guess or I don't know it was cool Like it's not that I was a question Oh, like you're having a class where you're just like I can't be in here I hate it because there's no one I can relate to it's ever know I don't think I did like the classes I took in high school weren't bad. It's not like I hated every subject. I actually liked a lot of the subjects I'm here.
Yeah, yeah, like I like school, you know like especially high school. Yeah, I mean if I go back up Would you probably I don't know what we'll say that for the end because yeah, okay Yeah, cuz I want to talk about some other stuff because as I said in the beginning I have a pretty funny story about the first day of high school when I'm trying to find my classes So the way my high school was set up we had two buildings that were two stories So there were classes on the first first story in the class so two buildings and there were two stories Yeah, I'm saying that two separate buildings that were both two stories. Okay, right? So my math class refreshment here was in one of those buildings and it was on the same floor Like when you get your schedule it says, you know, like if it's on the second floor all the rooms on the second floor Are gonna probably start with it number two right?
Right, right? Yeah, two eleven two ten and then the bottom floor was one ten one eleven So I think my math class was like two twenty one beat So when I was trying to find my math class the way the building set up It's it's a rectangular building, right? And then the stairs to get to the second floor or in the middle of the building on the long side of the rectangle and then So it's like on the sides. No, like so like, you know a rectangle, right?
Let you imagine okay folks imagine I'm drawing a rectangle I'm starting at the top left and I'm going to my right. Okay, so that's a long side Yeah, I go down that's just sort of short side and I go back that's a long side The stairs were on the long side so they were in the middle of the building. Oh, okay So yeah, but the way they were they were in they go into the building up So it's like an in-depth of the building so like when you're walking around the whole entire building and you get to the point where the stairs are There's like a hallway to the stairs, you know, I mean, so it's like there's an in the building Yeah, and I'm walking around the building. I'm going to the same floor I'm walking around trying to find my classroom and in that in-depth or where the stairs are there's a classroom right there Which I never knew about but we're not never knew about I didn't know cuz you know it's first day Yeah, right and I'm walking and I'm thinking I'm looking at the room numbers.
Okay, my room is two twenty one beat I'm looking at my okay, two twenty two twenty one I walk past the hallway see a whole bunch of kids lined up there because I guess they're also waiting for the class or they're just hanging out there Walk by that. I'm just like no, it's not there keep going to 22. I'm like wait My classroom is two twenty one beat Yeah, like what the hell's two twenty one beat right and like the thing too is when I walked by that hallway and I looked down the hallway All the kids that were standing there just so happen to like look at me to they're like look this restaurant I'm just like definitely not down that way I don't walk down those kids. I don't know that so I walk past and then when I get to two twenty two and I'm like oh no Where is it?
They go back. I'm like it is down that hallway So I go back and I'm just walking down the hallway with my head down because I know everyone see like this It's so obvious too because I walk by look and they look at me I'm like no no not there keep going come back and I'm like oh it is there and they're just like Yeah, it was really long shame. I was walking in between the kids with my head down just like I'm gonna go to my class Yeah, that was it other than that like it was pretty easy to find the rest of my classes My campus wasn't that big either it was decent size I guess for high school, but it wasn't huge yeah, like the classrooms were pretty spread out, but they're easy to follow Yeah, I did something like that in college where I was walking to the wrong classroom. Oh, yeah, and I was like never walked into the wrong classroom No, okay, just the perfect Just cuz it's like I never did Never happened to me, but college I did a few times.
Yeah, so like you're high school obviously had homecomings and whatnot Yeah, right. Did you guys ever build floats and whatnot? No, you guys never built floats Nope, you're like never or you just never went to the building. I don't remember floats So I'm gonna say no like we never had it really I mean we probably did for maybe for like games and stuff Maybe what me possibly yeah for my high school We're homecoming like one day out of the week It'd be like Friday the whole day would be spent building floats like you could join the flow building party And then on Friday the whole day you don't have to go to your classes.
You just build a float the whole day Yeah, no, I mean man. That was the best. I love those. I always join those things too And that's like the other reason why I never felt that I wasn't in a specific group because of that because the flow building team or party I was called specifically Prisha was that a lot of them were jocks or athletes, but then a lot of them too were just normal high school students That just wanted to be apart something yeah, you know, so it was a good opportunity to put yourself out there Yeah, get in to all the other social clicks I guess and we it's possibly my school had that I particularly don't remember just because like high school I started really getting into like boy For all you youngins out there before Call of Duty 4 modern warfare There was a call to do before that game and I was the one that I played religiously But like I started playing like computer games around that time and though I kind of gotten to that group of like okay Did you do you have any like computer clubs we did?
Were you in it? Yeah, so we had one computer club where the teacher allowed us actually play counter strike What bro? Yeah, we had a lantern a minute. That's no yeah, not brag But a few night gills on people and what they're doing I came in third I feel good about myself because like you know, yeah, yeah, I actually got to play that Yeah, yeah, we did halo the very first halo when that was on computer But um, yeah, like I kind of got into that group.
So I mean it's possible my school might have that but I really can't recall though Yeah, there was this one time I don't know how that story brought up this story, but I'm backtracking here So my high school was kind of known for before I got into it before my freshman year and kind of before my brother's freshman year My high school was kind of known for being hella ghetto was it yeah? Like a lot of gangs Like the name of your high school. I mean I don't see why not Well, no, I have a friend at work and went to school in Tracy. Okay.
Yeah, I think she went to West High Yeah, that was my high school. Okay. Yeah, well, that Shout out to only West High I just remember a freshman year I think it was freshman year because my high school was known for being ghetto They were supposedly like a lot of gangs on campus and the school had a lot of Latinos in it And there's this one time during my freshman year where there was like a full-on riot was yes, like no Just like you part of I mean like obviously I'm sure you hurt people but like you got up in it Luckily it was so the way my high school did I'm sure you're high school dude, too There was a first lunch and a second. Yes.
Yeah, so I think freshman year I think I had first lunch and it was the end of first lunch second lunch was just coming out my class After first lunch was upstairs, so I was making my way upstairs I don't even know how I got started But all of a sudden you just look down and you see crowds of people just fighting what like a shade of look like a concert and a mosh pit Yeah, it was crazy. I was just like whoa, I heard the rumors, but I never thought I see this No, I gotta wish during my day. It's a match that was around. I'll be like oh But it was crazy like I saw the forum riot and like I watched it for a quick minute, you know If my mom ever listens to this I did go to class already mom, but I watched it for a quick minute Oh, so now I saw people getting punched dang there were no major injuries at least I didn't think there were right if there was no one reported it but I'm pretty sure the school's not gonna be like today.
We lost these many people It was crazy like actually seeing the right like I never thought I would see it, but honestly after that day it held a Down there's like no more gangs really I don't know what happened before the end for wars. Yeah, no seriously There's no more gangs really on caps. I think they all got kicked out I Don't know if there's no more gangs like after that day freshman year and on the school got better Yeah, you know, I wasn't as bad man and then the other or go ahead. Yeah, so we actually did have a riot at my school Oh, you too?
Yeah, I so I was kind of like separated because I think I had a different lunch from all my friends I just kind of sat on a balcony or whatever and a bunch But there was a fight that broke out between like a significant group of people like the campus police came and literally they started macing them just straight up there being may as you could hear like yelped screams this other year this kid was oh my god This kid let me tell you so I guess his girl like breaks up with him on Valentine's Day And so you know how like those prison windows their plexiglass and there's like that wiring in the middle Yeah, apparently this kid repeatedly like smashed his head against one and put like punched it with his arm and because he's so mad Hey, yeah, and then someone point out dude your arms like messed up Yeah, and you look at his arm he started screaming because it's all like cut up and he's bleeding down Yeah, this other kid got tossed through a window. Yeah, yeah Yeah, I guess what was pretty good. Yeah, yeah my squad a guard tower like my yeah My because my school the school layout right was is one building is two stories You had your main cafeteria and in front of the cafeteria was a courtyard and then down this way with classrooms and the walkers Right well before my school was a school was actually a prison. Oh, okay And shut down and they were refurbished it to be a school ironically enough and part of that though was there's a guard tower Yeah, and so it just so had they didn't build the guard Some other high schools in Vegas I did have like like the metal detectors yeah, and they would get some secrets would have to get like kind of down Yeah, my school never had that thankfully and going off of that did you ever cuz you know school shootings now such a big thing Unfortunately, yeah, did you ever your high school ever experience anything like that while you were there nothing too drastic?
There was one there's my senior year I was in my sixth period class and we had a lockdown because we were told there was a stranger on site Oh, and so like I mean when you're there you kind of do start to hear sounds and you can't really tell that it's gunshots Yeah, and I've never really been around firearms to really tell I heard banging But I was like whatever it's best to remain calm That sort of thing but at another high school though I think there was a parent of a bull of a kid who is being bullied apparently the story is that the kid tells his parents that he's being Bully wants to switch schools that sort of deal his dad rolls up to the school with a loaded gun looking for the bully Yeah, I don't know if that's true or not. Yeah, it was another high school Yeah, it was on the news that this parent just rolled up to the school with a loaded gun and I was like one That's a dope ass parent, but two that's a serious parent to yeah, they're willing to like roll to school Yeah before you went into your high school was there any did you have any rumors about bad stuff or anything like that going off of Expectations for high school. Yes. No, no, but there was it was right when like smoking pot and like dare that whole kind of thing was Kind of going on still bit never remember my freshman year.
I actually went to the bathroom once This dude trip offers me like hey, you want to get hit and I'm a freshman like no I just got the day program can't do that Today I said no my nearly the moment walk out of the bathroom the Dean campus police rushing grab that kid for smoking pot Yeah, yeah, but no like other than the whole like freshman Friday and the regular like high school stuff year That's kind of it. I mean I didn't really do you have any bullies because I didn't have any bullies No, I'm not like physically like you know. Oh, that's the bully Yeah, there was no one ever There's no one ever in the hallways beating up. Yeah, you know, I mean there's no There were bullies there probably like psychological bullies or something just picking on the kids after school Do you think that's the psychological bullying or like being wailed on either one is bad bad But I feel like you're being well done.
I feel like a psychological ones worst because it being well done Those rules will heal psychologically those wounds will take forever to heal. Yeah, you know like your body can get used to it Yeah, but going back a little bit because I actually have another story about a time in high school the whole gun shooting thing We also had a lockdown my freshman year to we had a lockdown and it wasn't for a gun shooting or a stranger anything like that It was actually for a bomb threat. Whoa. Yeah, there's a bomb threat on campus School goes hard me.
Yeah, right right Yeah, but yeah, there's a bomb threat on campus lockdown happened early in the morning too So it was going off for a good amount of this whole time like we were in our classrooms from like 10 Just the one class that yeah, it got called in on that it got called in on we were stuck in there from like 10 a.m. To like after lunch Pretty much almost to the end of school. Did you guys not eat? Sorry?
I mean That's the most important thing right did you get your meal? I'm just curious you know me. I know I'm like Provisionary snacks or something. I don't remember to be honest and like here's the thing too What's crazy to think about now is this is nothing to joke about you know like bomb threats or school shootings But just seeing the news now with the high school shootings and how crazy it is and how it affects those people Honestly when that bomb threat happened and we were stuck in the class.
I was happy. I was like shoot. No class. That's cool We can chill we got that's you know, that's how much things have changed now.
Yeah, like it's nearly not a joke anymore Yeah, like that thing that was never a thing, you know Like when we heard that there's a bump that we're just like the security guards got it. It's cool Let's just kick back relax and the thing to I was in like the class I was in I was in the class of my crush more time to spend Where are you? It was just crazy and the thing that happened Supposedly there. I don't know who found out about it But I guess kids students were saying they were getting supposedly like some raffle tickets for like little notes that said if you have this You will live or something like that what yeah, that was the thing that's scary.
Yeah, they never found I think I don't think they ever found Well, obviously they never found a bomb they didn't find anything I don't think they ever found the perpetrator, but after that that was like the only major thing Do you think our generation has something to do with how high schools are like are now in terms of like that Bullying and like school shootings and all that waiting our generation I mean, this is something I've kind of noticed recently is like people were on our age I've seen on my Facebook and my social media that I try to limit They've always blamed like the generation before us for like ruining the economy Telling us to get a job to pay for our house, but there's like oh, but we can't like everything so expensive now whatever They've always blamed the baby whom or generation or the generation before us. I never really agreed with that I mean to me the way things are now just unfortunately, that's the hammer delt. Yeah, this is the way I don't think our generation has anything to do with School shootings. Do you think we could have done something better though?
I mean, I suppose like that's a whole nother topic. Yeah, that's one deep Yeah, that's one deep. Let's skip that. We'll talk about that for another day Yeah, I guess that's the topic is high school.
Let's go into how was your sophomore year was it any different from freshman year? Yeah, it was different sophomore year because first year I was like the shy me Asian kid right you know typical like scared 14 year old Brett sophomore year I was like I made a goal That I would take a girl to homecoming like that was my goal for the year for sophomore year First off more year was to like be more like make more friends my goal every year was just to get a girlfriend You know, I was like make more friends get a girlfriend and take a girl homecoming. Hopefully your girlfriend Yeah, I accomplished making more friends I did not take a girl homecoming, but I tried to be more like But that's when I started reading a lot around sophomore year in junior year And I kind of realized a bit more about myself around that time But you feel the status change as in like freshman year You're the little fish, you know and as the years go on you get you have more authority I guess amongst freshmen and whatnot. I mean it clicked on me I guess senior year just because I could tell they're a freshman because they didn't know where they're going Yeah, I was like come freshman.
It was more like I just like oh, yeah, you were a bully. No, I'm kidding I try to be the cool senior guy, you know like hey, man, you want to go down that way? Yeah, you know, yeah, like I helped a few freshman get to last and stuff like that, but not good citizen Yeah, you know, I try to be I said the standard high there, but uh, did you have seniors who were like okay? I'm quarterback and I'm senior.
I'm the king of it all like who Acted so above everyone else. Did you ever have anyone like that in your high school? Um, no, I don't think so like I said the Space Engineering Academy had a good variety of students in there Like one of them was a football player. Yeah, and then another one was a basketball player Whatever there were a lot of athletes surprisingly in the space engineering academy basically and so it was just you know There was no way for them to be like oh, I'm the king, you know, you're like, you're a nerd You're the space engineering academy, but put yourself down.
Yeah calm down You're like relaxing. Yeah, I don't think there are really any kings or queens at my school again if there were I was just totally out of Did not care at all. That's the other thing too I feel like with 13 reasons why because it's a story, you know, you have all these main characters and they're going through all this stuff But when I watch that show I look at all the background characters. I'm just like that's me.
Yeah, right? I didn't care for any of this drama. I was just there to go to school Yeah, I think that's how it was I think that's why I never noticed any bullies or anything like that and the funny thing is too is actually I experienced more or I seen more bullies like in middle school. Did you ring before high school?
Yeah, were you bullied? No, I was I personally wasn't bullied, but I just seen there were I felt like there were more bullies in middle school than high school At least I'm high middle school like I knew who the bullies were and I would just avoid them And I'm not gonna lie one of them was my friend, but yeah, that's that yeah, that's in the past Yeah, cuz there's this one kid too who he was like this huge dude Not too jesus fat, but he was just like really tall and like big or a middle schooler like we're his age So a lot of the time there are a lot of people that like were kind of afraid of him and they really talked so not much And I don't want to say that he was bullied But you know, I'm sure the jocks of middle school are the people who thought they were like the shit were like oh look at this big loser, you know? Yeah, what was he like a gentle giant? Yeah, I didn't really talk to him that much in middle school But I talked to enough for him to know me so when he came to high school because we went to the same high school too Yeah, like he was like oh hey What's up dude, and then I became friends with him more in high school Yeah, and because of that because he was since he hit high school he got even bigger So like honestly, I have like a personal bodyguard So I was set you know I wasn't afraid to get bullied cuz I'd be like there's my friend right there You want to bully me go talk to him, you know, he was like six foot damn in middle school He was like big maybe not six foot.
I mean I was short as black side He was tall so he was like a big dude so by high school, you know He was even bigger I think he played a couple sports too in high school So he had muscles and anything and he was my bodyguard honestly that's cool. Yeah, we're still we're not good friends now I don't know where he is now, but where we are shout out to you bro. Yeah, protecting me during high school not that I needed it None so like junior senior year where I found like my solid group of friends that I still kind of talked to you know You ever see that meme on that gag where it shows or I guess not like anywhere pretty much where it shows like a whole bunch of people The mojis of the people right and since freshman year it's like a big group then somewhere you get smaller than junior Smaller than senior year. It's like only four people you ever seen that no you ever seen that everything that oh Sorry, moving on but it was about that It just it just pretty much showed that like as the year progresses your group or your click gets more tight and smaller Yeah, like freshman you have a whole bunch of friends cuz you're talking to everyone yeah, then as the year goes on you kind of yeah You stick to one group mainly yeah, and I was just gonna say for me it honestly did not feel that way It felt opposite like freshman year only knew a few people sophomore year I knew more people junior year more and then senior year more You know yeah, I think for me like well, sorry No, I got you off, but like you said how you got closer to the people yeah that yeah, I got closer to certain people But I knew I still had a lot of friends yeah not to say that I was very popular.
You know I wasn't really wasn't that popular But I can see you being popular yeah, thanks that like token Asian friend well I'm that guy I'm that token Asian friend I can see you being that guy no I was that guy who had all the good stuff like No, not the drugs. I had the good food honestly my mom is gonna sound really dumb and really corny But yes during high school my mom made my much is still always yeah, right yeah I Just go off at that real quick though because in middle school my mom would make my lunch she would make these grilled cheese sandwiches But with egg like in it yeah, so it's hella good right egg and ham and I had a one day for lunch in middle school My friends were like what's that I was a sandwich from all made and they asked like can I try it so I gave him a piece They tried it they held like dude. Can you make more can you make more make more like yeah sure whatever next day I tell my mom can you make it to this time she's like yeah, she makes me too I give once my friend and he's like all this is so good word starts to spread that I have bomb-ass sandwiches right So everyone's like I guess I'm just so like literally you can ask my mom this you show about from me She cuz she tells everyone dude my son started selling my sandwiches. I started selling in middle school.
Yeah 50 yes people cuz they would ask me like a dollar 50 I'll be bring like four sandwiches to school sell all of them then use the money to buy my own lunch or save up Yeah, I know right. I know I didn't do that I school should have done that I school to I can't really relate to that in the traditional sense, but my school day I don't know who they were but this Mexican family started selling burritos for like a dollar hella good Yeah, I don't know if you know what a family would come on campus They're like they didn't look like students. I'm sure they were related to somebody. Yeah, but just go out your school I guess because they've been the cafeteria just like yeah, I'm like oh whatever so I would buy them and I liked it And it's just like I don't know who they were because they have any badges right They were just there and they literally had like the silver like trays at Filipino parties You know that just a regular trade it was filled with money sometimes the school will have people come on campus and sell food Like during certain events.
You sure it wasn't just an event that you were unaware of Literally they were there every day. Oh, it was like dope. I guess I was like I don't know what this is by except that you call the burrito every time what did you get a burrito every time? I did on like towards like Thursdays and Fridays before that.
I would probably just grab like a pop-tarting day to raid I pop-tarting. Oh my god. So my dad wouldn't buy me a 360 right? How's that about high school?
So my dad every day for lunch would only give me two dollars. Okay, that's it. No more no less two dollars for lunch Two dollars for lunch really cheap back then. I wonder what it is now.
Do you must be hella expensive? Right. I was like I want a 360. I was like, yeah, I say but money.
I was like, okay. Can I get a joke? He's like no, so I was like, what's the two dollars always for lunch? Dude for like like four much straight I just ate ketchup packets at lunch.
That's gross. Why you telling this story? No because I wanted a 360 so bad I saved two dollars for like four much straight. Just about 360.
Did you buy it? Yeah. Hell yeah. You bought one?
Yeah, yeah, good for you. Yes. I was so proud of myself like I I was like I'm gonna do this your internal systems must be terrible though Yeah, man. I was it's pretty bad when I got home.
I was so hungry. Oh my god Honestly like for high school for my lunch a lot of this my friends we shared lunch. I saved money that way Well my high school we had you would pay like in the beginning of the school year Oh, sorry Mountain had like a card and there was money on that card pretty much yeah for lunches And then there was a student store that had like really good stuff But you actually have to pay cash for that. Yeah, my rich friends.
I guess not rich friends But just the friends that had allowance because I never had allowance. Yeah, it was just bare necessities Yeah, it was just my mom gave me money. She gave me money It wasn't for anything it was just like I have twenty dollars here But anyways, so I would just share lunch with my friends and then save money that way Yeah, but we're kind of out of time I want to talk more about high school But I guess we can say that for another I mean You probably got this part out but in the beginning when we were trying to figure out the recording. Oh, yeah You probably got that part out.
We probably go for another ten minutes. Yeah, I guess stop junior year Was it any different from sophomore freshman year? Yeah junior year? I took Psychology and junior year was like when you took all like the actual legit classes that you needed for college that and like junior You're allowed me to take classes that I was interested in but you know like freshman and sophomore year You can have to take like fluff classes.
Yeah, I just needed the actual G classes. Yeah, so junior year I took psych and I also took English lit honors, which got me into reading. Okay, and the like those classes. I really liked a lot Psychology obviously learned a lot by myself English lit got me into got me in reading a red quite a few good books one of them was a thousand splendid songs by Khalid Hussein who also wrote a kite runner or kite runner So like those like you got me to like reading those those kinds of books.
So who's nice? How does that deal with junior year? Oh? Yeah, I'm junior so I got into reading that's when I met like Nathan and everybody like and like maybe and For our listeners those are some of my friends.
No cares. I'm just kidding RJ RJ black Yeah, black black well, right? Yeah, we're hell throwing out their name Yes, I doubt you guys junior year for me I think not that I hate junior, but I hated my class my sixth period class or junior year because my sixth period class was an engineering class And for the whole year basically we've just worked on projects and my friends that were in that class we were in a group together So every project would just be the same group So it was like all my friends and it was a group of four so me plus three other guys right those three guys Just so happen to be athletes as well They were on the track team and every time because it's six period every time they have a track meet away They'd have to leave fifth period. So you just imagine me coming in the six period.
Oh being by myself of the projects Yeah, it was so annoying and they know this too, and they know it and they just laughed it off They're just like it's cool Kyle. Thank you for doing all the work I'm just like no like screw you guys for always leaving and it was so it wasn't embarrassing It was funny, but like everyone in that class would just see me at my table just working on the project I like these two girls are just like poor Kyle and then his friends are ever there I was like fuck you guys I got the work yeah I got this one of the projects we had to do was a marble sorter like we had a build a marble sorter at a legos and program it using C code or whatever it was called C++ or some shit Yeah, and it was a two-part task first part was someone had a pretty much build a sorter That was sort the marbles by size and then the second part was to build a machine that was sort the marbles by color Yeah, so my part of the project me and who's on my you don't know these people but it was my friend Jesse Keonean No, Peter Peter I think Peter was in my class can't remember who but think it was Peter anyways me and Jesse were supposed to do The part where we had to sort the marbles by color So I had a program that and I built the machine and like literally that whole project They were always on because of the stupid track meets right so then a whole entire time I'm trying to figure out How am I gonna build this marble sorter like how am I gonna make the machine right so I was going around to all the other groups Looking at all their machines and just pulling ideas from each and every one of you Right So I built our half of the project which was just sort the marbles by color and then a few times out of the months They were there on some of the projects so the other two people they had to build the one to sort the marbles by size And they did a basic as design They just built this tall like lego that had a ramp going down and then as it goes down the hole on the ramp gets bigger or smaller You know so the big ones will fall through the big hole smaller and smaller and the problem with that when you put our two machines together Because there's a light sensor right that's why we used to distinguish the different colors We had a light sensor and we had a program that light sensor to read what color the marble was So when I made my code for the for my machine for just my machine right it worked perfectly It took me so long to write the code to because I had to learn all by myself because they were never there Yeah So I was learning it and then I finally got it down perfectly right like my machine would sort the marble by color with ease I was like oh we're gonna we're so gonna get a on this as soon as the day the turn it in comes when that happens You put your two machines together and then the first part that sorts of marbles It's supposed to sort the marbles by size then the small marbles are the ones that color when the small ones go into the small destination That's where it goes to my machine and then with my machine they get sorted by color What happened with my other groups machine was that it was so tall that it blocked some of the light Oh my light sensor had so like literally as soon as we turn the program on because the way I built my machine was a gate mechanism I had a gate that had one little hole that holds the marble where the light sensor is right The light sensor will read it and then whatever color was the gate would move the marble to the certain hole where that color needed to go Right, that's how I programmed it But because they're stupid tall machine blocked my light sensor It read them like as soon as we hit play art my gate fucking shot out By the she which also blocked the large marble that they sorted going to their ramp because my day just shot out blocked their large marble And then it was there's a game over my my teacher was like well, that's unfortunate Like I told you like no, Mr. Mink. I swear to God this worked before they got here I was so pissed like he yeah He gave us a pass right now just because he saw me every day by myself doing this whole thing So he knew like I worked hard on it and I think he gave us like an A or B I can't remember yeah, we're not working, but yeah, that was that was junior year senior year was pretty cool I mean senior year was senior year the whole anticipation for graduation, you know Just waiting to graduate were you ever like nervous?
Did you ever want to leave were you excited to leave high school or? Not particularly because I knew I was one of the Philippines and I knew I was leaving family because like every summer I would always come here to California So like I knew that was coming and like that was kind of hard for me to like reconcile with also like when that happens when you leave Significantly your friends who you not to blame anyone, but just it's time like like you know times gonna put you apart Yeah, and I'm like remaining in contact with a few people but other times It was just you know like damn this is it yeah Yeah, so I definitely felt that same way too It's just knowing that a lot of my close friends who were going to different colleges Like because they always say oh as soon as you go off to college You're never gonna talk to your high school friends which some of the issue don't talk to some of my school friends The only high school friend I still talk to was obviously Peter. Yeah, I was feeling that like oh man It's gonna suck leaving you guys but at the same time. I was like oh, yeah, I'm leaving you guys Yeah, you know it was time yeah.
Yeah. Yeah, it was definitely time to go I did hate the whole sorry because you are not so good. I did take the whole hags thing that people wrote Have a great summer. Yeah, it's like right have a great summer.
Yeah like hags Just so many words, you know and you know high school students are lazy. Yeah acronym drew a thing back then Oh, yeah, definitely for sure. Yeah, speaking of time our time's up. All right, so I was talking on since I hope you enjoyed our subject this week.
We probably will come back to this because I'm sure we have more stories Oh, yeah, it's probably you'll part to some part to yeah part to yeah same with the talking shows I've still got a lot. I want to talk about that. Yeah Anyways, that's it like I said I'm Kyle and I'm Christopher and hope you enjoyed it. Yeah, oh keep talking.
Yeah Why do I drop us a comment for next topic?
