Thomas has been walking for a month when he reaches Yreka, a far-northern county seat that feels both abandoned by California and shaped by it. Local grievances over redistricting, the “No Kings” protests, and a recently cleared encampment on a nearby hill form the backdrop for his first serious temptation to stop walking.Inside diners and small shops, the language of resentment feels close to the Florida talk radio that once discipled him.
