Episode #20: Krisstal Clayton on Pedagogy, Prison, and Gamification

Dr. Krisstal Clayton & @LauraPasquini have a great discussion on the #InVinoFab Podcast episode #20 about everything from pedagogy, psychology, prison, and law. Krisstal cares and has compassion for her teaching, field of research, and humanity. It comes across in her university instruction and activism within the prison system. Her openness and willingness to educate others is apparent as she puts so much of herself into her teaching.  Not only did Krisstal share about her own teaching experiences and how it led her to gamification, but she also expressed her own entry into the profession and how being vulnerable with her learners actually engage them in her courses. We talk law school, dental care in prisons, student evaluations, and university teaching experiences.  A few questions that drives her research and teaching is, who does and doesn’t deserve healthcare? What other injustices are within the legal and prison system? What do we get wrong with identity and eyewitness testimonies? Are they accurate? She shared the story of how being a victim of stalking led her to empathize with those who are incarcerated. She wanted to give the perspective of  not just the victim, but also the person who committed the crime. She allowed herself to be vulnerable.  “I just try to put myself in the seats of my students, and think about, if you could only learn one thing, what would that be? If you learn nothing else from Psych & Law [course] I need you to learn, that if ever you’re told your under arrest and you have the right to remain silent – you CHOOSE that right to remain silent.” ~Krisstal Clayton Now some of her research and teaching is among prison inmates and lack of access to dental care the implications of this question go beyond people who are incarcerated. It’s about accessibility, vulnerable populations and who gets to have health benefits. Kristaal discussed her approach to teaching, classroom management and gamification. She made the important point that gamify doesn’t mean tech.  How are we helping students develop their ethics and praxis? We want our students to build a world in which they want to thrive.
