Day 20 of #NaPodPoMo Paul O'Mahony introduces Derek Mahon  -  he reads his poem Derigibles   Paul reads Derek’s  poem.Today I learned:  It's never too late to come across a word that opens a window.DERIGIBLESWe who used to drift     superbly in mid-air,each a giant airship     before ‘the last war’,shrink to a soft buzz     about financial centressurprising visitors,     hackers and bean countersin cloud-flown highrises.     Cloud-slow, we snoop for hourson open-plan offices     and cloudy cocktail bars.Amnesia and mystique     have cast into oblivionfiery failures like     Italia, R101,the whole brief catalogue     of mad catastrophes;and showy Hindenburg     of course, the last of these.A temporary setback.     Our time will come againwith helium in the sack     instead of hydrogenwhile slow idealists     gaze at refrozen ice,reflourishing rain forests,     the oceans back in place;at sand and stars, blue skies,     clear water, scattered lightas in the early days     of nearly silent flight._______________________Listen to the full series at https://napodpomo.org/napodpomo-2025-mega-feed/ Follow me on Spotify, Audioboom, and Apple Podcasts
