Episode 208: Swell Voyage with Liz Clark
from The Catherine Plano Podcast · host Catherine Plano
Catherine is here today with Liz Clark. When Liz was nine, her family spent seven months sailing down Mexico’s Pacific Coast. After returning to land life in San Diego, she dreamed of one day seeing the world by sailboat. While earning her BA in Environmental Studies, she fell in love with surfing. After college, she serendipitously met a mentor who helped her acquire a sailboat. Liz left California at 25 years old as captain of her 40-ft sailboat, Swell, in 2006, and has sailed over 20,000 nautical miles in the Pacific exploring for remote waves to surf, learning from new cultures, seeking truth, living simply from the sea, and promoting environmental causes. She kept her nomadic lifestyle going through writing, blogging, photography, representing conscious brands, and earning recognition as a surf adventurer, environmental activist, and captain. In 2015, she was nominated by National Geographic for Adventurer of the Year. Her recently released memoir, Swell: A Sailing Surfer’s Voyage of Awakening, details both her inner and outer journeys over the last decade. She hopes to inspire people to live their passions and reconnect with nature and our inherent Oneness. She is now based in Tahiti, taking a break from sailing to focus her energy on environmental and animal welfare activism, working with Changing Tides Foundation in the US, and A Ti’a Matairea in Tahiti.
