In 2017 she was diagnosed with stage two cancer and underwent lymph node removal. Both diagnosis were treated with chemotherapy and radiation. Since 2012., LaTonya was elected to be on the patient advisory committee., where she and fellow members shared their experiences to change policies through their experiences to make a better pathway for each patient entering the doors of Advocate Health and Atrium Health Levine Cancer. Some of the therapeutic therapy that has helped LaTonya thrive through her diagnosis have been writing poetry. The words from her poetry have been used in a play called. Tatas Tales Performed in English and Spanish, which was performed at the Pink House and for the doctors and nurses at Atrium health.
